This essay deals with the problem of the reception of the post-Vatican II liturgical reform, which is often perceived as a break with the pre-conciliar liturgy. It addresses the fact that within the current form of the Mass according to Paul VI, a celebration in the spirit of the so-called “Old Mass” is often mistakenly considered impossible. This perception is primarily related to the fact that the liturgical reform has opened up a wide range of freedom in the celebration of Mass, which in practice has led to traditional elements of the Roman Rite, as practised until the approval of the new Missal, now appearing only rarely or not at all. This development over several decades has contributed to a growing attraction to the Old Mass, which should not be reduced to being merely a liturgical form associated with so-called Traditionalists. Rather, it can be observed as a phenomenon in which Catholics express a desire for a Latin-Roman culture of worship that remains free from cultural or theological adaptations. The essay seeks to foster an awareness that, while ideological tendencies may indeed be present in the debate surrounding the Old Mass, it should above all be understood as a critical inquiry directed at contemporary liturgical practice.
