Abstract

The present article situates liturgical competence at the intersection of educational theory and liturgical practice. Building on the shift toward a competence-based approach, it defines liturgical competence as an integrative habitus. This habitus combines professional competence (reflective knowledge and ritual skill) with personal competence (status and role model). The demands of worship distinguish between preparation and leadership, in which a specific “embodied knowledge” resonates with the congregation. An abstract form of basic liturgical education is criticized: fundamental practices only gain significance through the concrete form of worship. Liturgical presence manifests itself as work on the setting, whereby “appropriateness” seeks a balance between congregational expectations and the inherent logic of form. A model of hierarchical levels of competence allows for the differentiation of role profiles, with fundamental basic competence rooted in personal spiritual practice.
